What’s your deal?
I’m a film and media writer based in New York, NY.

Where might I know you from?
Most likely, if you know of me at all, it’s because of Cinematical, a film blog which I co-founded in March 2005, where I served as editor and lead contributor for one year. During that time, I covered film festivals, wrote 10-12 news items a day as well as 3-4 feature stories a week, and wrote, produced, and hosted a short-lived daily video podcast.

Before Cinematical, I cobbled together a BFA in Film through a combination of credits earned at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the San Francisco Art Institute. I spent six months after that living in Los Angeles and dealing with the usual post-graduate despondancy — borrowing money from my dad, sending out resumes, applying for graduate programs, internet dating, starting a blog, etc. In the summer of 2003, I moved to New York, got a job at the cheese counter at Dean and Deluca, and enrolled in the Masters program in Cinema Studies at New York University. For the next two years, I shuttled between a variety of jobs in the food industry, whilst studying with great film critics and scholars such as Ed Guerrero, Tom Gunning, and J. Hoberman. During the first three months of Cinematical, I was working at a pasta factory and preparing to take my final exam for my MA by day, and blogging by night. Six months after that, Cinematical had become widely-read in the film blog world, earning praise from wonderful people such as Roger Ebert, Anne Thompson and The Guardian UK. The blog network that the site was part of was soon purchased by AOL. In March 2006, I took a job with the parent company, helping to relaunch Netscape.com.

I heard you totally sold out.
I loved blogging for a living. However, I don’t miss 16 hour days and no health insurance.

So what are you doing now?
I’m an Anchor at Netscape.com. This means a variety of things, but most interestingly, it means I write about film and culture events. I also do a fair amount of freelance writing. For more information, check out my Recent Writings page.

Netscape? That’s still around?
Uh-huh.

So, what, it’s like dial-up?
Not exactly. On July 1, we relaunched Netscape.com as a general interest social news portal. Think Google News meets Digg, with some original reporting and a bit of additional Web 2.0-type stuff thrown in. In addition, there is still a Netscape browser and a Netscape-branded low-cost dial-up service, but I’m not involved with either.

    I just slid over here from Twitter to explore.

    Now I’m wondering if [I] too should move from Blogger. I’m not a web designer (I could barely insert the twitter form into my blog page into my blogger blog!), but WordPress seems to be a bit better designed than Blogger.
    Are you going to expound (here) on the reasons for your move to WordPress? I’ll check back, so no need to respond directly if so.

    Новый способ давления на кандидата на пост Главы г. Химки

    Новый способ “наказать” тех, кто посмел участвовать в выборной кампании не на стороне действующей власти изобрели правоохранительные органы г.о. Химки.
    Руководствуясь не нормой закона, а чьей-то “волей” сотрудники милиции решили “проверить” все фирмы, внесшие денежные средства в избирательный фонд неудобных кандидатов.
    Начались “проверки” с телефонных звонков – где директор, сколько человек работает на фирме. После чего последовали “письма счастья” с просьбой предоставить всю бухгалтерскую документацию, учредительные документы фирмы, и даже, план экспликации БТИ.
    Такие запросы химкинским фирмам рассылает 1 отдел Оперативно-розыскной части № 9 Управления по налоговым преступлениям ГУВД Московской области за подписью начальника подполковника милиции Д.В. Языкова.
    И всё это в то время, когда Президент дал прямое указание правоохранительным органам о прекращении всех незаконных проверок малого и среднего бизнеса. С это целью внесены изменения в Федеральный закон “О милиции” – из статьи 11 этого закона исключены пункты 25 и 35, на основании которых ранее правоохранительные органы имели право проверять финансово-хозяйственную деятельность предприятий.
    Видно, об изменениях действующего законодательства местные правоохранительные органы не уведомлены. И не смотрят телепередачи с выступлениями Президента.
    Может быть, эта публикация подвигнет их к исполнению указаний Президента, а также к изучению и соблюдению действующего законодательства
